Kitchen walls and Taping and Jointing

Kitchen wallsIt’s been a busy but really productive week. We’ve chosen a kitchen from IKEA and went to pick it up the other day. It’s all in boxes in the lounge at the moment. When we went to choose the kitchen we actually made a few minor changes which altered the dimensions of the space required. Fortunately I hadn’t built the walls for the kitchen at the time so after purchasing the kitchen I knew exactly how it was going to fit together. That meant I could build the required wall to fit exactly.

As you can see the walls are now up, and with a first coat of filler for the taping and jointing. It’s a L-Shaped kitchen with the classic triangle of fridge in the corner, sink and cooker opposite.

Whilst the filler was out we have also finished the taping and jointing of the two kids rooms upstairs and they have had a undercoat on the plasterboard.

The kids rooms have taken priority over our bedroom as they come to stay with me at the weekends and I don’t really want them living in a complete shambles.

The lounge is still a storage room and all the bathrooms are as yet unfinished, although the upstairs bathroom has been painted. It just hasn’t got a toilet, sinks or shower yet!

It’s going to be very tight to move in on time

Fuji F31df

My new camera arrived today that I ordered online a couple of days ago. However, it was a bit of a saga.

Originally I ordered a Fuji F30 (based on Internet reviews and I only want a basic digital camera) from www.multe-pass.com (french site) on Sunday. Paid a little extra for delivery in 24hrs and thought it would be really useful for blogging and the Summer holidays with the kids.

I checked my order Monday on the website but it didn't seem to have been processed! It didn't instill confidence but then I got a email at about 11:00 saying that the order is being processed, thank you etc. Checked online and good, order is there. Rubs hands. Obviously a manual system and data entry happened Monday morning. Bit primitive.

Much to my annoyance I then got an email a few hours later saying 'For your protection blah blah…. we need two proofs of address/identity… Your order is on hold…'. The order is being delivered to the Credit Card address so whats the beef. Anyway pissed off I decided it was nonsense and anyone could Photoshop an ID/Utility bill, so I sent a snotty email to cancel the order. I mean what is the point of 24 hour delivery if you have to snail mail proof of ID. Come on France wake up to the Internet.

I thought maybe they would forgo the check and send me my stuff. However checking later the order was canceled and I got a mail to confirm it. Damn, they called my bluff.

On the bright side, undaunted I went shopping again and found another site, www.digit-photo.com and ordered a Fuji F31fd (basically the same camera but a slightly later updated model for the same price). Plumped for 48Hr delivery this time and with no hassle and instant web status/email updates it arrived today. Tracking the package online was good. Obviously much better IT systems.

Camera charging as I type.

France 24

A new TV station for 24 hour news as been started called France 24

It's a bit like BBC News 24, or CNN, but with a French perspective. It's available streamed on the web in English, French and Arabic. It's also available in English to Sky Digital satellite television viewers on channel 515

I've watched it a little and it certainly seems to be more 'international' the the other news channels, which stick mainly to UK and US news stories.

TGV trip

During the school summer holidays I have been taking the kids out to various attractions in the area, and one of those attractions was to visit a train museum for my 6 year old son Hugh. He enjoyed the trip but was disappointed that there was not a TGV on the model layout. So, a couple of days ago I booked a day return on the TGV from St Malo to Rennes. The TGV line from Paris has recently been extended into St Malo with a new station

When we arrived at the station the train was waiting at the platform and I noticed on the front of the train a small brass plaque claiming a world record speed for this particular train of 515.3 Km/h in May 1990. That's over 300 mph. Checking the Internet on our return after a very enjoyable trip revealed this page about the world record. Very impressive.

So not only did Hugh get to go on the TGV, but also the record breaking Trainset 325 at that.

Kestrel

Caroline and the children found a dead Kestrel at the front of the house today. I looked like it had flown into a window and died. The interesting thing about it was that it was ringed. Caroline did a bit of research and found out that it belonged to someone in Brussels, Belgium. Thats a flight of about 530kms (330 miles).

Caroline is going to phone up and at least let the owner know what happened to his bird.

Scalextric

Nothing to do with gites, but I was pleased to find my old Scalextric set while installing a new water heater.

Of course being a big kid, I decided to get it out and see if it still worked after 40 years. Bits of the track were rusty and needed a clean with wire wool, but it worked almost straight away. The cars were of the 'power sledge' design with a metal chassis and a big magnet. Not as fast as I remembered as a kid but still great fun and my two children really enjoyed playing with the set.

In the box there are about another 50 pieces of track so if I have the time I should make up a monster circuit.

Autumn is here

The autumn has really set in here. We're getting strong westerly winds together with rain.

Today was the first day for a fire – after a lovely Sunday lunch of Roast Chicken with all the trimmings and a very English Pear Upsidedown Pudding, we're all snuggled up in front of the fire watching television.

Despite the mauvais temps the grass is still growing at a pace and this morning was spent mowing a very soggy lawn. Whilst doing this I heard one of our cockerels doing his first crow – more of a cough than a crow, but I'm sure we're soon to be woken to loud cock-a-doodle-doos – Oh no! I remember he's French so it will be Cock-a-Rico!
